The principles and goals set out in the new Essex Planning Protocol will now be used by Basildon Council to shape and deliver its future planning services.
The document, which was last week (Wednesday 10 October) endorsed by the Regeneration Committee, aims to ensure there is a common basis across the county for designing and delivering more effective Local Planning Authority (LPA) services. It has been created through collaboration between the Essex Planning Officers Association (EPOA) and the Essex Developers Group (EDG) and represents a shared commitment to secure more sustainable growth and increase efficiency and certainty in the planning process.
The protocol includes the following four shared commitments:
- Effective communication
- Ensuring certainty and consistency
- Provision of resources to deliver an efficient and high quality planning service
- Opportunities for training
Cllr Anthony Hedley, Chairman of the Regeneration Committee, said: “We are committed to supporting the delivery of sustainable growth, and understand that we need to work together with both developers and neighbouring local authorities to meet demand and shape a high quality built environment, where our communities can thrive.
“Endorsing the Essex Planning Protocol means we accept the common standard there should be to planning services available in the county, which will in turn drive improvements for anyone who interacts with the planning system – from residents, businesses, developers, planning agents and councillors.”
